Elani- The Indissoluble Kenyan Trio

As one of Kenya’s musical groups, Elani, a musical trio stands on its grounds towards the dissipation of sensational music with melodious tunes alongside captivating wording which tends to put its audience in a state of amazement through the musical genres Neosoul, Afropop, Contemporary R&B and Soul.

Elani has been signed to the record label Record Union and comprises of three individuals namely:

  • Maureen Kunga
  • Wambui Ngugi
  • Brian Chweya

Early Life

Elani met in January 2008, at Alliance Français in Nairobi. Originally, it consisted of four members but the departure of Kimani has been an unexplainable leave.

They decided to take their career to better level in 2008 by staying dedicated and solemn about all their music.

Maureen Kunga, is a law school graduate from the University of Nairobi and an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Wambui Ngugi is an Acturial Science graduate from the University of Nairobi.

Brian Chweya is a law school graduate from the University of Nairobi and an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Discography

In 2013, the band released their debut single titled, “Jana Usiki” which became a great success and opened up a way for other successful singles like “Milele” which was centered on a forbidden love, the lady being forced to marry a doctor instead of the one her heart beats for.

Controversies

On January 2016, Elani released a statement through their YouTube channel and other social media platforms, accusing the Music Copyright Society of Kenya(MCSK) of corruption over music royalty disparity. Having paid them KES 31,000 for their royalties for television and radio airplay .They later stated that after addressing their problem to the authorities of the society Brian, member if the group was called to pay a compensation of KES 300,000 rendering the motives behind the payments questionnable.

One of the mixed gender musical groups in Kenya consisting of two ladies and a gentleman, who are motivated to leaving an indelible mark in the global music tapestry.
